BBC Music Magazine Award for Sir Simon Rattle and the Berliner Philharmoniker

The winners of the BBC Music Magazine Awards 2013 have been announced and we are delighted that Sir Simon Rattle's recording of Bruckner’s 9th Symphony with the Berliner Philharmoniker is a winner in the Orchestral category.

BBC Music Magazine said “We’ve become so comfortable with the magnificent but truncated version of Bruckner’s Ninth Symphony that it comes as something  of a shock to realise that the composer had almost completed an entire Finale before he died. Sir Simon Rattle and the Berlin Philharmonic made a blazing case for it in this landmark recording and any doubts Rattle may have had about the project have long been swept away. “As I said to the orchestra when they first started working on it” , says Rattle, “every time you hear it , it seems more  convincing. So I also have to thank Bruckner himself, and the extraordinary team of four musicians who brought this Finale to life for us. Whatever one thinks of this movement , it gives you an idea of what Bruckner actually had in mind, and indeed the sheer scale of his conception. And for all of us, it’s a symphony very close to our hearts – this project was a great experience.”
